Jasmine
Level 4 – 30/32
Excellent examples to back up your presentation. You made very clear and concise analogies of your case study and covered all areas needed for the exam. To further your progress, try and look up some of the origins of these TV dramas, where the ideas came from, what themes they contain within them and the history. How does this enhance the BBC status?

Hi Jasmine...

A quality effort. Well done for a first practice exam.

FORMS - Your points about the hybrid cross-genre are very good. You could then share some ideas about the mix of codes and conventions (e.g.reality TV - on-location, handheld camera, diegetic sound, judicious editing and soap opera drama - multiple narratives, cliff hangers, soundtrack, casting and character construction. (Level 3 - 8)

AUDIENCE - this is a good section. Try to link some of your point from Form about semiotics with ideas around mode of address. (level 3 - 9)

REPRESENTATIONS - I agree with your analysis that the stereotypes are generally negative, although do you think the institution knows this? Is there any sense of irony in the show's production - in a way, they may be taking the micky out of these stereotypes (is there some comedy here too?). Also, are there more things to be said about gender representation in terms of sexuality - consider the 'alpha male' representations of hetro-sexual masculinity. (level 3 - 7)

INSTITUTIONS - Some good points here too but you could also mention that ITV2 is commercial (unlike BBC as you rightly say) this means that advertising is very important which means ratings are the only real objective for this channel therefore generalised and limited representations are just the ticket. (level 2 - 5)

OVERALL - 29 (C+)

Well done on the whole - you got me thinking! Nice.

Lots to do but a decent start!

Laters

I think it is very good, how you have gone into a lot of detail in your work.
I've never seen the Inbetweeners and I will make sure I watch it.
